After spending an eye opening summer in Graz, Austria in 2012, I looked down on the idyllic village through my airplane window and said "I'm not done with you yet, I'll be back!" I had completely fall in love with the "other side of the pond," and was determined to live abroad. I had no particular destination in mind - I just knew I would be happy if I was sitting in an orchestra.
I dedicated the entire second year of my masters degree to this goal. I had a big map of Europe hanging in my room and thought about it everyday. I applied for many orchestras and orchestral academies in Europe that I never got to audition for because of timing with school or my part-time job (playing principal flute in the Des Moines Symphony). Finally, I got an invitation to audition for the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and it was during the first week of spring break when I had nothing to do (fate?) and even though it was less than two weeks away, flights were cheap (flying to the North Pole in winter is cheap, who knew?) so I went for it. The rest is history! I moved to Finland in July of 2013 and never looked back.
